Mission Better was launched in 2020 with planet friendly products to help you begin your mission to be more sustainable – but here’s how it started.
I’m Emma, founder of Mission Better – and my first conscious planet friendly swap was at university, when I decided to try and bring a reusable coffee cup with me every time I went to get a coffee, after being inspired by a friend.
What started as a New Years resolution ended up being a catalyst for changing my mindset around single use products. Each and every time I opted to use my own cup, I could visualise the disposable cup I’d just saved from landfill, and this growing pile of imaginary cups really motivated me to keep it up.
This motivation encouraged me to look at other – seemingly easy – swaps I could make, which would have the same kind of accumulative impact. It didn’t take long before I wouldn’t leave the house without a reusable water bottle, reusable straws, my own cutlery, kitchen sink etc. and what once would have seemed like noticeable changes to my routine, soon became my new normal.
Fast forward to a global pandemic-induced lost job, and an always increasing belief that we all need to start where we are and do what we can to fight climate change, Mission Better was launched in August 2020 to help other people feel that same motivation to start as I did – and find their own new favourite planet friendly products!
Did you know that in the last ten years we have produced more plastic than we did in the whole of the last century? With over 8 million tonnes of plastic being dumped into our oceans every year, it’s clear that something needs to change.
Faced with such daunting stats, it can often feel as though we’re being told that everything we’re doing is wrong, and that we need to change everything all at once and do it all perfectly – which can understandably put many off starting in the first place, and isn’t sustainable in the long term. The truth is nobody is perfect, and it’s much better that we all try and make a few small changes where we can – and Mission Better is here to make that even easier!
